What started as an argument outside a Palm Beach Gardens apartment complex turned into gunfire late last week, according to police, and an 18-year-old now faces a stack of serious felony charges.

Investigators say Nivahn Da Martinique Walker, a Palm Beach Gardens resident, pulled a handgun during a dispute near PGA Boulevard and Interstate 95 and fired multiple rounds. At least one bullet hit a parked Tesla, and children were in the area at the time, though police say no one was injured.

Officers were called to the scene after multiple witnesses reported that Walker had opened fire during the confrontation, according to WPBF. A witness identified Walker as the shooter, and a K-9 unit later tracked him down near I-95, the outlet reported. Police say the incident unfolded outside an apartment complex near PGA Boulevard.

In an arrest report cited by WPBF, Walker allegedly admitted he "fired a warning shot and later additional rounds to scare the other man away" and told detectives he got rid of the gun after the shooting. He was arrested on June 29 and booked on felony counts that include attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, tampering with evidence, possession of a firearm by a delinquent, and three counts of child abuse, according to police.

Charges and What They Mean

Attempted first-degree murder and aggravated assault rank among Florida’s most serious felony charges. Prosecutors typically charge criminal attempts based on the severity of the underlying crime, which is laid out in Fla. Stat. §777.04. The law that bars certain felons and delinquent juveniles from having guns is Fla. Stat. §790.23.

Together, those statutes help explain how a single altercation that involves a firearm, especially around children, can quickly stack up to multiple felony counts for a young defendant.
