A usually quiet police yard in north-central Phoenix turned chaotic Friday night when an SUV barreled through a fence at the Mountain View Precinct and slammed into a parked squad car, throwing a Phoenix officer from the vehicle and sending him to the hospital.
Crash at Mountain View Precinct
The collision happened just before 10 p.m. near the precinct in the area of Maryland Avenue and 20th Street, just south of Glendale Avenue. Investigators say the SUV left a parking lot heading north, plowed through a fence, went down a berm and crashed into a parked patrol vehicle that was sitting at the fuel pumps.
According to Arizona's Family, no other property or people were reported injured in the crash.
Officer Condition and Investigation
The Mountain View Precinct is listed at 2075 East Maryland Avenue, per the City of Phoenix. The officer who was thrown from the squad car was taken to a hospital and is in stable condition, and police say he is expected to be OK.
The Phoenix Police Department did not immediately release the officer's name, and investigators remained at the scene late into the night as they worked to piece together what happened. Police say the SUV driver is suspected of impairment and that the investigation is ongoing.
Friday night's crash was one of two law-enforcement-involved collisions in Phoenix that evening. Arizona's Family reports that a separate crash near 19th Avenue and Interstate 17 later sent a detention deputy and three inmates to the hospital.
What Residents Should Know
Police say no other injuries or property damage were reported at the Mountain View Precinct crash. Investigators are asking anyone who was in the area and may have seen the collision, or who has video of it, to contact authorities to help with the case.
Officials have not announced any immediate charges against the driver, and the city has not provided a timeline for when the investigation will be completed.
