A routine school enrollment errand turned into a nightmare for a Phoenix-area father after an automated screening system linked him to a Wisconsin sex-offender registry entry. Jonathan Castillo was barred from Las Brisas Elementary before the school later cleared him, but he is still demanding to know how a computer-generated alert became a real-world accusation.

Castillo said school staff photographed him for what he believed was a visitor badge, then texted that he was not approved and called him. According to Arizona's Family, the principal told Castillo that his name and photo had been flagged in Wisconsin in connection with a sexual-assault registry record; Castillo said he has never been to Wisconsin and is not a sex offender.
Las Brisas is a Deer Valley Unified school serving the northwest Phoenix area, according to the school's own site. Its visitor rules require adults to register and show identification, making screening part of the campus-security routine, but the incident raised a more basic question about what happens when an automated match is wrong.
School Apologized But Castillo Wants Accountability
Castillo wrote to school officials asking which vendor was used and what information triggered the result. The school responded Wednesday with an apology, said the vendor's automated check matched Castillo's middle name and certain physical characteristics to someone on Wisconsin's registry, and confirmed that he had been cleared, as reported by Arizona's Family.
That explanation did not resolve Castillo's concerns. He wants to know who authorized the campus ban, whether a person reviewed the match before he was turned away, and what safeguards will prevent another parent from being subjected to the same ordeal.
The episode is a sharp reminder that a registry hit is not the same thing as a confirmed identity. Schools have a legitimate interest in protecting students, but a middle-name and physical-description match should not be allowed to carry the weight of a verified criminal record without meaningful human review.
