A Sunday morning in Plantation ended in tragedy when a four-year-old girl died after being found face down in a lake behind her family’s home, police said. Her father immediately pulled her from the water, began CPR and called 911. Paramedics rushed the child to Broward General Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. Plantation detectives are now investigating the incident.
According to the Miami Herald, the father discovered the girl at about 10 a.m. in the 500 block of Northwest 107th Avenue and started life-saving efforts before emergency crews arrived. Plantation Fire Rescue paramedics then transported the child to Broward General, the report said.
Plantation Detectives Investigating
The department said in a statement that “Based on the information gathered thus far, investigators believe this to be a tragic accidental drowning,” as reported by the Miami Herald. Detectives are working to understand how the child ended up in the lake while investigators document the scene and collect evidence.
Why Natural Water Is Dangerous for Toddlers
Drowning is the leading cause of injury-related death for children ages 1 to 4 in the United States, and many fatal child drownings happen in natural water such as lakes and retention ponds, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says. The agency notes that for every child who drowns, several more are treated for nonfatal drowning injuries. Toddlers can slip into water quickly and quietly during brief lapses in supervision.
Local Resources and What Residents Can Do
Local agencies urge constant, close supervision near any body of water, secure barriers around yards and pools, and that adults learn hands-only CPR. The Broward Sheriff's Office points to free community education programs and CPR training offered through its Fire Rescue Public Education unit. Residents with information or questions about the investigation can contact the Plantation Police Department Public Information Office.
Neighbors and city officials have asked for privacy for the grieving family as detectives continue their work. Authorities said they will release more information when appropriate, and officials will update the public as the investigation progresses.
