A quiet early-morning drive on Interstate 10 in Hamilton County turned fatal Sunday when a Miami man crashed into the back of a parked tractor-trailer and died at the scene, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The wreck happened around 4:45 a.m. near mile markers 467 and 468 as the driver approached a left-hand curve on I-10, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report cited by WTXL. Troopers said the 34-year-old Miami man veered out of his lane and struck the trailer of a semi that was parked on the emergency shoulder.
The impact was deadly. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and authorities have not released his name or any additional identifying information. Investigators say they still do not know why he left his lane, according to WTXL. Troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol are continuing to investigate.
Move Over Law and Roadside Safety
The crash is another stark reminder of how dangerous the roadside can be, especially on high-speed interstates. Florida's Move Over law requires drivers on multi-lane highways to move out of the lane closest to a stopped vehicle when possible, or slow down by 20 miles per hour below the posted speed limit if moving over is not safe. The law applies to disabled and commercial vehicles, including tractor-trailers, as outlined by the Florida Department of Transportation.
The statute is meant to protect first responders, tow operators and stranded drivers who find themselves just a few feet from fast-moving traffic on shoulders and curves.
Investigation Ongoing
FHP troopers have not released further details about what may have led to the lane departure. For now, officials are repeating a familiar plea to drivers: slow down, move over for stopped vehicles and use extra caution on curves and shoulders where commercial trucks or other vehicles may be parked.
