One rider was killed and another is fighting for life after two motorcycles collided early Sunday morning near NW 128th Street and NW Interurban Road in Kansas City, turning a late-night ride into a fatal crash scene.
Emergency crews were called just after 3:40 a.m. to the area near NW 128th Street and NW Interurban Road, where investigators say both riders were thrown from their bikes. Officials have not yet released the riders' identities.
Crash details
According to investigators, a blue Harley-Davidson Ultra Glide and a silver Honda were traveling north together on Interurban Road when the Honda failed to navigate a curve and struck the Harley. The impact sent both motorcycles off the roadway.
First responders pronounced the Honda driver dead at the scene. The Harley rider was rushed to a nearby hospital and remained in critical condition as of 10:20 a.m., according to KCTV.
Investigators said neither rider was wearing a helmet, and both were ejected from their motorcycles, a combination that rarely ends well on a dark, rural stretch of road.

Motorcyclist deaths remain stubbornly high nationwide, and the numbers typically spike during the summer riding season when more bikes are on the road and late-night rides are more common.

The Kansas City Police Department told KCTV that this is the 44th fatal crash it has investigated so far this year, matching last year's count at this point. Detectives are still working to determine exactly what caused the Honda to lose control on the curve. According to the Kansas City Police Department, its new KCPD Data page features eight types of reports that are updated monthly and can be used to track crash information. City records show the Kansas City Open Data portal lists 'KCPD Crime Reports' among its datasets, providing a place to look for primary crash data.
Authorities have not released any additional details, and the investigation remains active.
