Predawn gunfire rattled a stretch of Roxbury's Shawmut Avenue early Saturday, leaving one person injured and sending Boston police into an active shooting investigation. The victim was taken to a local hospital with what officers described as non-life-threatening wounds after police responded and locked down the scene around 4:20 a.m., then began canvassing for witnesses. No arrests had been announced as of Saturday morning.
What police say
According to NBC Boston, officers were called to 787 Shawmut Avenue at about 4:20 a.m., where they found one person suffering from gunshot wounds. NBC Boston reported that the victim was transported to a hospital and that police described the injuries as non-life-threatening. At the time of that report, no suspects had been taken into custody.
Investigation and recent police action
The shooting follows a recent uptick in enforcement activity by Boston police in Roxbury. In a press release, the Boston Police Department said detectives served a search warrant on July 15 tied to a June 20 shots-fired investigation and recovered a 9mm firearm along with clothing and other evidence, taking two people into custody. That operation involved detectives from Districts B-2 and B-3, with assistance from the Youth Violence Strike Force, according to officials.
Roxbury's recent trend
Neighborhood shootings have been an ongoing concern this year. In March, the Boston Globe reported that two people were injured near Kendall Street and Shawmut Avenue when gunfire erupted and a bullet ruptured a building's sprinkler pipe. Local law enforcement officials have repeatedly urged residents to share tips, surveillance footage, and other information to help detectives connect the dots between incidents.
How to help
Investigators are again asking for the public's help. Anyone with information is urged to contact Boston Police Crime Stoppers at 1-800-494-TIPS, text TIP to CRIME (27463), or reach out directly to District B-2 detectives. Police say anonymous tips and video can be submitted online. Authorities have not released any suspect descriptions and are calling on witnesses to come forward as the investigation continues.
