After more than two decades of tuning up bikes and fitting boots for city dwellers, REI is calling it quits at the Landmark Center. The co-op’s Fenway store on Park Drive will close for good on Aug. 13, 2026, wrapping a 23-year run in Boston and leaving many urban outdoor fans facing a longer haul for big-ticket gear and in-person service.
The Park Drive shop has already stopped taking some service work and is now largely focused on winding down existing orders and pickups ahead of the final day.
According to Boston.com, the Landmark Center location will shut its doors permanently on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at 8 p.m., as part of a broader round of closures that also hits stores in New York City and New Jersey.
The REI Boston store page notes that the last day to place a Buy Online, Pick Up In Store order is July 29, that the last day to drop off bikes, skis and snowboards for service was July 6, and that customers must pick up any remaining orders by Aug. 13.
Why REI Is Trimming Its Footprint
Behind the scenes, REI has been reshaping its operations as part of a multi-year plan to get the co-op back to consistent profitability. Retail Dive reported that in 2025 the company narrowed its net loss to about $54.3 million even as gross profit edged higher, a sign that the cost-cutting and restructuring are starting to bite.
Retail Dive also quoted CEO Mary Beth Laughton saying the company is "seeing clear signs that our plan is working, strengthening the business now and shaping a stronger future for the co-op." For Boston, though, that “future” will not include the long-running Fenway outpost.
Unionized Stores And Staff Concerns
The Boston store is unionized, and representatives say they are pressing for clarity on what the shutdown means for workers, including staffing plans, severance and transfer options as the countdown to closing continues.
The Boston Globe reported that REI told employees the decision was driven by business factors, not union activity, and that staffers can apply for open roles at other locations in the region.
What Shoppers Should Know
Anyone with recent orders or gear in for work at the Fenway shop will need to collect their stuff by the Aug. 13 closing date. After that, the nearest brick-and-mortar alternatives for in-person shopping and bike or ski service will be REI locations in Reading, Hingham and Framingham.
