A Rivian pickup truck crashed through the storefront of an East San Jose crawfish restaurant today, leaving one person hospitalized and forcing the evacuation of nearby businesses. The collision also triggered a gas leak, though firefighters quickly capped it, and no life-threatening injuries were reported.
The crash was reported at about 11:39 AM in the 1700 block of Story Road near King Road, where the truck broke through the eatery’s front. According to The Mercury News, dispatch recordings described a man trapped beneath debris who was later taken to a hospital.
At least one other person was treated by emergency responders, while San Jose fire personnel cleared the restaurant and adjacent businesses, including a nail salon and an optometry office. The evacuation was prompted by a resulting gas leak that was quickly contained.
Police said the driver stopped at the scene and cooperated with investigators. The person hospitalized was reported to have non-life-threatening injuries, and there was no immediate indication that the driver had been arrested or cited; the cause of the crash had not been disclosed.
Crash Comes Along A Corridor Targeted For Safety Upgrades
The crash happened on a stretch of Story Road that city transportation planners have identified as having a high number of fatal and severe collisions. The City of San José is planning raised bikeways, protected intersections, transit boarding islands and lighting improvements along the Story-Keyes corridor, with construction expected to begin in 2027.
