A quiet Tuesday morning in Rochelle turned grim when a 57-year-old woman was shot inside a home, then managed to flee and drive herself to a relative’s house in Aurora, according to police. Officers later forced their way into the Rochelle residence in the 1,200 block of Tilton Park Drive and found a 48-year-old man dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Rochelle Police Department has described the incident as an isolated, domestic-related case, with the investigation still underway.
What Police Say Happened
According to a Rochelle Police Department news release reported by Shaw Local, the first call for help came in at about 8:43 a.m. Tuesday. Officers and the department’s emergency response team spent several hours attempting to make contact with anyone inside the Tilton Park Drive home before ultimately forcing entry.
The release states that units from the Rochelle Fire Department, Illinois State Police and Aurora Police Department assisted during the response, turning the normally quiet block into an active law enforcement scene.
Victim And Suspect Details
Police say the 57-year-old woman was able to leave the shooting scene on her own and drive to her sister’s home in Aurora. There, Aurora officers confirmed she had been shot, and she was taken to a local hospital, where she was listed in stable condition.
Back in Rochelle, officers entering the Tilton Park Drive residence found the 48-year-old suspect “deceased from what appears to be a self‑inflicted gunshot wound,” the department said in a release reported by Shaw Local. Investigators say no foul play is suspected in his death beyond his own actions, and detectives remained on scene as they worked through the case details.
Investigation And How To Help
The Rochelle Police Department is leading the investigation and has asked anyone with information to come forward. According to the department’s public information, tips and non-emergency inquiries can be made through the Rochelle Police Department page on the City of Rochelle website or by calling the department’s non-emergency line at 815-562-2131.
Local Context
While serious shootings are still relatively rare in the Hub City, officers have been called to more than one major scene this year. In January, a shooting in Rochelle left one person dead and another in critical condition, according to local television coverage. WIFR reported on that earlier case, a reminder that although such incidents are uncommon, they carry serious and lasting impact when they do occur.
