San Antonio is waking up under mostly cloudy skies Thursday, but the brief morning calm will give way to another furnace-like afternoon. Temperatures are expected to climb from the upper 70s to around 100 degrees, with the heat index reaching as high as 108.
Another Hot Afternoon, No Rain In Sight
Clouds should thin quickly as the day unfolds, leaving mostly sunny skies and no meaningful rain chance. The National Weather Service expects south-southeast winds of 5 to 10 mph, offering little relief from the heat.
Warm Nights Keep The Heat Going
Thursday night will remain muggy, with temperatures dipping only to about 76 degrees. Friday brings another mostly sunny day near 99 degrees, while the heat index could reach 107; Saturday looks nearly identical, with a high around 99.
A Small Weekend Rain Chance
The forecast finally gets a little less one-note late Saturday night, when there is a 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 a.m. Sunday could see a few lingering showers before 7 a.m., but most of the day should turn mostly sunny with a high near 97, so this is not shaping up to be a washout.
Heat Risk Remains The Main Story
The outlook calls for moderate to major heat risk across the region each afternoon into early August, and the forecast lists no active watches, warnings or advisories. San Antonio Metro Health issued a Level II heat advisory Monday and urged residents to use air-conditioned places such as libraries, pools, community centers and malls for relief, according to the City of San Antonio.
Anyone spending time outside should drink water regularly, take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning, and avoid the hottest part of the afternoon when possible. Children, older adults, outdoor workers and pets will be especially vulnerable during this long run of heat.
