Club Volo, the new outdoor sports hub from Volo Sports, officially opened last Friday at the Serpentine Pavilion in downtown San Jose, turning the curving art installation and an adjacent lot into courts for pickleball, sand volleyball and futsal. The launch featured free play, live music and a mayoral pickup game that included Mayor Matt Mahan.
Club Volo is the Bay Area outpost of Volo Sports and is set to run leagues, drop-ins and private-court rentals at the SoFA site. The San Jose location lists six outdoor pickleball courts, one sand-volleyball court and a futsal pitch, according to Club Volo, and the company traces its start back to Baltimore in 2011 via Volo Sports. As reported by The Mercury News, Volo's San Jose director Colin Hanahoe said the local program has grown from two leagues and 25 players to roughly 6,000 participants.
Where it sits
Club Volo occupies the Serpentine Pavilion and adjacent plaza at 300 South First Street, a sculptural installation Westbank brought to SoFA in late 2021. The pavilion, built from about 1,800 stacked fiberglass frames, has had an uneven program history but is now being used as a multiyear activation for sports and events, according to San José Spotlight.
What to play and when
The footprint includes pickup sessions, weekday leagues and private rentals, and Volo Sports shows recurring pickleball, futsal and sand-volleyball sessions as well as tournaments and social events. The company is also scheduling World Cup watch parties, including events on July 11 and July 19, according to the venue's listings. Local coverage on The San Jose Blog noted that the launch featured a mayoral appearance and that operating hours are currently organized around evening weekday blocks and midday weekend play.
Why it matters
City leaders and local business outlets say more event programming is one piece of downtown's slow rebuild, with the club explicitly targeting adults ages 18–40 and students. The San Jose hub is intended to draw San Jose State students and nearby employees, according to Silicon Valley Business Journal. Volo's San Jose director told The Mercury News that the pace of sign-ups shows there is strong demand for more things to do in the city, and operators hope regular leagues and events will help bring steady foot traffic back to the SoFA district.
Whether you are looking for a casual pickup game or a weekly league commitment, Club Volo has evening and weekend slots and events as the new hub settles into the neighborhood. More openings, tournaments, and community programming are expected in the coming months as the operator builds out a regular schedule and partnerships.
