A quick stop at a BP station on Hickman Mills Drive turned into a six-figure surprise for one Jackson County woman, who scratched her way to a $100,000 prize on a $20 “2,000,000 Bankroll” ticket in Kansas City.
The Missouri Lottery confirmed the win in a July 16 release, noting that the player chose to stay anonymous when she validated the ticket. The lucky scratcher was a top prize in the $20 "2,000,000 Bankroll" Scratchers game, which still shows multiple unclaimed top prizes, including two $2 million jackpots and other six-figure payouts.
According to Missouri Lottery, the winning ticket was sold at BP, 8025 Hickman Mills Drive, and later validated at the Lottery’s Kansas City regional office. Officials confirmed the $100,000 award has been paid to the winner.
Winner's reaction
The new winner told the Missouri Lottery she needed a moment to process what she was seeing.
"I was shocked, but I was able to keep it quiet until I got out to my car to call my husband," she said.
According to lottery officials, it was actually the shiny design of the "2,000,000 Bankroll" ticket that caught her eye and prompted the purchase that led to the big score.
How much she'll actually pocket
The $100,000 headline number is not what ultimately lands in her bank account, thanks to automatic tax withholdings on larger lottery wins.
Per the IRS’ Publication 17 and state lottery claiming rules in 12 CSR 40‑60, the Missouri Lottery must withhold 24% for federal taxes on winnings over $5,000 and 4% for Missouri state tax on taxable lottery prizes. On a $100,000 win, that comes to roughly $28,000 withheld, leaving an immediate payout of around $72,000 before the winner files taxes and settles any final obligations.
What the win means locally
The gas station that sold the winning ticket also gets a small slice of the good news. Retailers that sell winning Scratchers are eligible for a bonus, typically equal to 2% of the prize, capped at $600.
Across Jackson County, those bonuses and commissions add up. In the 2025 fiscal year, players in the county claimed more than $96.8 million in Missouri Lottery prizes, while area retailers collected over $8.9 million in commissions and bonuses, according to the Kansas City Star. According to the Missouri Office of Administration, lottery transfers to education amounted to "more than $3.7 billion." The Missouri State Auditor's Office notes that "transfers of lottery proceeds to education have increased significantly in the years since advertising expenditures were reduced."
