Friday night at a South Salt Lake 7-Eleven turned violent when a man who had just pulled cash from an ATM was robbed, then run over by a truck as the suspect took off. Police say the victim had just withdrawn $1,400 from the machine outside the store at 2102 S. State Street when a thief snatched the money and jumped into a pickup. As the truck sped away, it turned sharply and rolled over part of the victim’s arms. He suffered critical but non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to survive. The alleged suspect was later arrested and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail.
How Police Say It Unfolded
According to KSL, a police booking affidavit states that the suspect lunged from behind just as the victim reached for his wallet, grabbed the cash, and bolted. The victim chased him to a waiting truck. The affidavit says the victim reported that the driver cranked the wheel and a portion of a tire rolled over his arms, leaving scrapes and what investigators described as “tire rash.” Detectives later pulled surveillance video from nearby businesses and used technology to track down and identify the vehicle.
Suspect Named And Taken Into Custody
South Salt Lake police identified the suspect as 55-year-old Bryan Scott Killpack, who was arrested and booked on Saturday night, according to KSL. South Salt Lake officer Shaun Ward told KSL the victim “received critical, but non-life-threatening injuries,” and investigators say they currently believe the crime was an opportunistic grab rather than something carefully planned out in advance.
Potential Charges Under Utah Law
Killpack has been booked on an investigation of aggravated robbery. Under Utah law, aggravated robbery is a first-degree felony when an offender causes serious bodily injury, uses a dangerous weapon, or takes an operable motor vehicle, as outlined in Utah Code.
Wider Concerns Around Convenience Store Crime
Violent robberies at convenience stores and gas stations have been on the radar of local prosecutors and federal partners for some time. In June 2025, the U.S. Attorney's Office in Utah highlighted a run of 7-Eleven robberies across Salt Lake County that ended in a federal prison sentence, underscoring a growing focus on repeat offenders, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Utah.
What Happens Next
The investigation is still active, with detectives continuing to comb through surveillance footage and witness statements as the case moves through the Salt Lake County booking and prosecutorial process. Police are asking anyone who has video or information from the 7-Eleven parking lot or southbound State Street around the time of the robbery to contact South Salt Lake police. The episode is a stark reminder to avoid flashing large amounts of cash in public and to stick to well-lit ATMs whenever possible.
