A Monday night drive on Chicago’s South Side ended in gunfire when an argument between motorists left a 28-year-old man shot in the rear shoulder and, by the next evening, a 56-year-old Chicago man in police custody, according to authorities.
Chicago police say the shooting happened around 8:52 p.m. Monday in the 7400 block of South South Chicago Avenue in the Grand Crossing neighborhood. Investigators say the victim and the other driver, identified by authorities as Edward Boyd, got into an argument while driving. The victim then heard a gunshot, felt pain, and realized he had been struck in the rear shoulder. Boyd allegedly sped away and was last seen heading east on 76th Street. The victim was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital in good condition. Boyd was arrested around 8:01 p.m. Tuesday in the 9600 block of South Western Avenue in Evergreen Park. These details were provided to the media by the Chicago Police Department, as reported by FOX 32 Chicago.
State police say road-rage cases can turn deadly
Law-enforcement agencies across Illinois have flagged an increase in road-rage incidents that escalate into shootings, and state troopers have urged motorists not to engage with aggressive drivers. The Illinois State Police have launched a public safety push, branded "Road Rage. Don't Engage." after several expressway shootings this year and have made multiple arrests in similar cases. For background on that campaign and recent expressway arrest activity, see the Illinois State Police release.
Charges and next steps
Authorities say Boyd has been charged with four felonies: attempted first-degree murder; aggravated battery involving the discharge of a firearm; aggravated discharge of a firearm at an occupied vehicle; and aggravated battery causing great bodily harm. He is due in court for a detention hearing on Thursday, and the information in the case was provided to reporters by the Chicago Police Department, as reported by FOX 32 Chicago.
