Early Thursday on South Spaulding Avenue in Chicago's Gage Park neighborhood, gunfire from a passing vehicle left two men wounded, including a 25-year-old who is fighting for his life. The shooting unfolded around 12:50 a.m., and detectives spent the early morning canvassing the block for witnesses and surveillance video.

According to ABC7 Chicago, the victims, ages 25 and 18, were standing outside when someone in a black vehicle opened fire. The 25-year-old was hit in the back and hand and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition. The 18-year-old was shot in the hand and transported to Mount Sinai in good condition. The attacker or attackers took off in an unknown direction, and Area One detectives are handling the investigation.
Neighborhood context
The shooting adds to a string of violent incidents in Gage Park this year. Hoodline previously reported on a nearby June daylight killing that left a man dead and again brought Area One detectives to the neighborhood to hunt for witnesses and video. Residents say recurring bursts of gunfire remain a stubborn worry on the Southwest Side, even as citywide crime numbers rise and fall.
