A Friday morning ride through Forest Park ended in handcuffs for a 26-year-old motorcycle rider, after Springfield police say they found a loaded handgun and a trafficking-sized stash of drugs during a traffic stop. Officers report that a search turned up a Glock-style pistol loaded with 15 rounds, roughly 124 small baggies of heroin, about 3.5 grams of crack-cocaine, Suboxone strips, a digital scale and $587 in cash. The rider briefly tried to take off but was quickly grabbed on the 100 block of Belmont Avenue, according to police.

Police say the whole thing started when officers noticed the motorcycle did not have a license plate and watched what they believed was a hand-to-hand sale on Locust Street. That sparked some quick surveillance that led to the stop in Forest Park. According to Western Mass News, officers identified the rider as 26-year-old Jose Gonzalez-Feliciano and already knew his license was suspended. The outlet reports the encounter unfolded on a Friday morning around 9 a.m.

What Officers Say They Recovered

The department later posted photos of the haul that show the loaded handgun and neatly packaged narcotics. Police say the firearm was loaded with 15 rounds and that the heroin was split into roughly 124 small bags ready for distribution.

As reported by WWLP, officers also found about 3.5 grams of crack, Suboxone, a digital scale and $587 in cash during a body search and a search of the rider's bag. All of it was logged as evidence, and Gonzalez-Feliciano was arrested on a slate of firearms, drug and motor-vehicle charges.

In a post on the Springfield Police Department Facebook page, officers listed charges that include convicted felon in possession of a firearm, firearm violation with two prior violent or drug crimes, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony (two counts), carrying a loaded large-capacity firearm on a public way, carrying a loaded firearm without a license (second offense), possession with intent to distribute a Class A drug and multiple Class B counts, along with several vehicle and equipment violations. Police said Gonzalez-Feliciano has prior convictions for possession of a large-capacity firearm and distribution of Class A and Class B drugs.

Charges And Possible Penalties

Under Massachusetts law, unlawful possession of a firearm and large-capacity-weapon offenses carry steep penalties and can trigger mandatory minimum prison terms, and repeat-offender provisions increase those minimums when there are prior violent or serious drug convictions. A Supreme Judicial Court opinion and statutory sections interpreting G.L. c.269 §10 spell out enhanced sentences for large-capacity-weapon violations and repeat offenders, which can amount to multi-year state prison terms. The court's ruling and the statute provide the framework prosecutors will use in charging and sentencing.

Police say the arrest was carried out by the department's Neighborhood Stabilization Bureau and fits into a string of recent firearms and drug actions in Springfield this spring, ranging from Firearms Investigation Unit sweeps to state trooper search warrants that uncovered large packaged stashes. Local reporting has shown that police and task forces have been zeroing in on illegal weapons and packaged heroin in city neighborhoods as part of a sustained enforcement push. The case remains under investigation and is expected to be handled by local prosecutors.
