A 17-year-old St. Cloud boy was killed Monday night when his motorcycle collided with a tractor pulling a silage wagon on a rural road in Langola Township, Benton County. Deputies were called around 8:30 p.m. to the intersection of 15th Ave NE and 160th St NE, where they found the rider with life-threatening injuries. First responders tried lifesaving measures, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators said he had been riding a small 1983 Honda Trail and did not appear to be wearing a helmet.
According to Bring Me The News, the tractor and silage wagon were heading north on 15th Avenue when the teen attempted to pass. As the motorcycle moved to overtake the slow-moving farm rig, the tractor turned left onto 160th Street, and the bike struck the wagon. The tractor driver told deputies he did not realize a motorcycle was behind him, and investigators noted that both the tractor and wagon were displaying slow-moving-vehicle signs.
What investigators say
The Benton County Sheriff’s Office said investigators concluded the teen did not see the tractor’s left-turn signal before the crash. Deputies reported finding no sign of impairment in either driver, and the case remains under investigation.
Rural roads and helmet safety
Crashes like this are a grim example of a well-known danger on country roads. Left-turn conflicts, where a larger vehicle turns in front of a passing motorcycle, make up a sizable share of two-vehicle fatal crashes on rural routes, according to transportation safety analysts.
Federal public-health reporting also highlights the stakes of helmet use. CDC analysis estimates that motorcycle helmets prevent roughly 37% of rider fatalities and significantly cut the risk of head injury in a crash.
The sheriff’s office has asked anyone who may have information or video related to the collision to contact deputies. The rider’s name has not yet been released, pending notification of his family, according to the initial report.
