Missouri is about to turn back-to-school shopping into a limited-time bargain hunt. For three days, from Friday, Aug. 7 through Sunday, Aug. 9, shoppers get a statewide break from sales tax on qualifying clothing, school supplies and certain computers and software. The catch: every deal comes with a specific per-item price cap. The discount applies to anyone who makes a qualifying purchase, so Missourians and out-of-state visitors alike can jump in.
What’s tax-free and the price caps
The Department of Revenue says the holiday runs from 12:01 a.m. Friday, Aug. 7 through midnight Sunday, Aug. 9. During that window, clothing with a taxable value of $100 or less per item is exempt, along with school supplies that do not exceed $50 per purchase. Graphing calculators qualify up to $150, prewritten computer software up to $350, and personal computers and peripherals are exempt when the taxable value does not exceed $1,500 per item, according to the Missouri Department of Revenue. The agency also confirms that both state and local sales and use taxes are suspended for qualifying purchases during the holiday.
How shoppers and retailers can prepare
Local coverage has underscored how open the holiday is. First Alert 4 notes that anyone who makes a qualified purchase is eligible for the tax break. Missouri State Treasurer Scott Fitzpatrick has urged families to plan ahead and pointed out that online orders paid during the holiday count, according to a press release from his office. Retailers should brace for heavier back-to-school traffic and be ready to track exempt sales or issue refunds for qualifying items if their registers cannot be reprogrammed in time.
Shop smart: rules and tips
There are a few fine-print details that can trip up a deal. Mandatory shipping and handling charges are included in an item’s taxable price, and purchases paid for during the holiday can be delivered later and still qualify. Those rules are laid out in vendor guidance from the Missouri Department of Revenue. If a store sells only a small share of qualifying items, it does not have to reprogram its registers, but it still has to provide refunds or negative adjustments on exempt sales. The tax holiday is written into state law in Section 144.049 of the Missouri Code, which spells out the statutory definitions and limits.
This three-day stretch is the regular early August holiday set by statute, and for families eyeing clothes, supplies or a new device, it may offer the biggest immediate savings of the season.
