On Monday night in the Delmar Loop, what started as a typical summer evening in one of St. Louis’ busiest entertainment strips quickly turned sideways when an estimated 30–35 teenagers poured onto the streets, sidewalks and nearby parking lots. Fireworks went off, fights reportedly broke out and several businesses scrambled to lock their doors, leaving customers sheltering inside and watching the scene unfold from behind glass.
Officers from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department’s 5th District rushed to the 6200 block of Delmar Boulevard and were joined by University City police as they tried to get the crowd under control. A nearby CVS shut down for the night, posting a note that it would reopen at 8 a.m. Police later told local media there were no arrests or citations and urged parents to keep closer tabs on kids heading into busy entertainment districts, according to KSDK.
Inside Session Taco, one customer who did not give their name told reporters the group “numbered about 30–35 kids” and claimed there were violent beatings. Witness Makayla Jamison said “a lot of people were pretty scared,” while another bystander, Abraham Gardner, recalled that it looked like the teens were “messing with a few of the businesses” before fireworks started going off, KSDK reported.
Curfew and summer "takeovers"
City leaders have been wrestling all summer with clusters of late night youth gatherings, sometimes dubbed “takeovers,” that can swamp busy corridors and trigger rapid police responses. In response, St. Louis rolled out targeted juvenile curfews earlier in the season and has leaned on parental supervision rules and stepped up patrols in an effort to keep repeat episodes from flaring up, as reported by Spectrum News.
