A 19-year-old man is behind bars after deputies say a Tesla slammed into an electric scooter in a pre-dawn hit-and-run last month in Little Havana, killing the rider. Tyquane Ramses Hankerson was arrested Tuesday and is facing a charge of leaving the scene of a crash involving death, according to jail records.
According to Local10, the crash happened around 1:36 a.m. on June 8, when a black 2019 Tesla Model 3 that investigators say was driven by Hankerson hit an Ausom electric stand-up scooter while heading north on Northwest 17th Avenue near loanDepot Park. The arrest report states the impact sent the rider onto the Tesla’s windshield, where the victim became partially wedged before sliding off and coming to rest in the center turn lane of Northwest 27th Avenue near Northwest 90th Street. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue medics pronounced the victim dead at 1:47 a.m., according to the report.
Detention and Records
The county’s Corrections & Rehabilitation Department operates an online “Inmate In-Custody Search” that lists bookings, housing locations and charges for people currently held in Miami-Dade facilities, including those processed at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, according to the Miami-Dade Corrections & Rehabilitation Department. The site explains how the public can look up booking details and how to contact the department for records or release information. Turner Guilford Knight serves as the county’s main release and booking hub.
Investigation and Arrest
Deputies say Hankerson initially stepped out of the Tesla, checked on the rider and called 911, then went back to the car before taking off on foot with two other occupants, according to the arrest report cited by Local10. Surveillance footage reportedly shows him getting out of the driver’s side and running toward the victim; investigators say he later returned to the scene with family members and was detained.
Detectives said Hankerson at first claimed he was only a passenger and pointed to a driver he identified as “TJ,” but investigators allege he ultimately gave them “a full confession,” which was redacted from the public version of the report. As of Wednesday, he was being held at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center with bond listed as “to be set,” and deputies said no other arrests had been confirmed.
