Federal agents say a metro Atlanta drug operation just took a serious hit, with three men now facing federal charges after authorities seized more than 280 pounds of methamphetamine and over four pounds of fentanyl in coordinated raids across the region. The arrests happened in Morrow, Austell and College Park, and all three suspects are being held in federal custody. Prosecutors identified them as 40-year-old Silvano Mendoza-Valencia, 45-year-old Robert Louis Burr and 20-year-old Christian Garcia-Esparza.
What Prosecutors Say
According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office, DEA agents working with local law enforcement recovered more than 280 pounds of methamphetamine, over four pounds of fentanyl and two illegally possessed firearms during a multi-jurisdiction operation. "Due to quick actions and diligent work of law enforcement across the region, the operations of these three alleged drug traffickers have been dismantled," U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg said in the statement.
Searches in Morrow Turned Up Fentanyl
As reported by Atlanta News First, DEA agents arrested Mendoza-Valencia on July 21 in Morrow after an alleged sale of about two pounds of methamphetamine. Agents then searched his home, where they reportedly found roughly 85 pounds of meth and two pounds of fentanyl in his bedroom. Prosecutors say Mendoza-Valencia is living in the country illegally.
Austell Traffic Stop Uncovered More Meth
According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, officers stopped Garcia-Esparza in Austell on July 22 after an alleged sale of more than six pounds of methamphetamine. Agents say they discovered about ten pounds of meth in his car, then searched his residence and backyard and found roughly 100 pounds more scattered around the property.
College Park Apartment Yielded Guns and More Drugs
Prosecutors and local reporting say agents searched Burr’s College Park apartment the same day. They found him next to a drawer containing two pounds of fentanyl, about 30 pounds of methamphetamine in a luggage case and another 20 pounds in a trash bag, along with two firearms, including an FN57 semiautomatic pistol loaded with armor-piercing ammunition. Burr is a convicted felon and is not legally permitted to possess firearms, Atlanta News First reports. All three men are charged in federal criminal complaints with conspiracy and possession with intent to distribute controlled substances.
Part of a String of Large Seizures
The case is the latest in a series of large drug busts hitting metro Atlanta this summer, as law enforcement targets what officials describe as bulk distribution networks. Earlier federal raids in mid-July recovered nearly 500 pounds of methamphetamine, according to FOX 5 Atlanta, highlighting prosecutors' focus on intercepting high-volume shipments.
Next Steps in Court
All three defendants are being held in U.S. Marshals custody and will face federal court proceedings. Assistant U.S. Attorney Steve A. Hsieh is listed as the prosecutor on the filings. Prosecutors emphasize that criminal complaints contain only charges and that the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they are proven guilty in court.
