Plantation police spent part of Monday hunting for a suspect who allegedly swiped a tractor-trailer, then ditched the big rig in the street and took off on foot. The search zeroed in on the area near the 200 block of South State Road 7 as air and K-9 units swept through nearby neighborhoods.
According to CBS News Miami, officers said the driver took the tractor-trailer, then bailed out and ran, leaving the semi parked in the roadway. The station's video showed aerial views of the truck and a heavy law-enforcement presence while the investigation was still unfolding.
Perimeter Established As Agencies Swarm Area
Plantation Police set up a perimeter around the scene and were joined by the Broward Sheriff's Office and the Florida Highway Patrol, NBC6 reported. Authorities urged residents in the surrounding area to stay inside while officers canvassed side streets, yards, and businesses looking for the suspect.
Air Unit And K-9 Teams Sweep The Scene
Sky 10 footage showed the tractor-trailer stopped in the roadway as officers and deputies went door to door in the neighborhood, and officials said air units and K-9 teams were assisting with the search, according to Local10. Local10 reported that by about 2 p.m., units had still not located the suspect and detectives continued to work the case. Anyone with information was asked to contact Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
Similar Incidents Show Why Helicopters Get Called In
Officials had not released any suspect description as of Monday evening, and the investigation remains active. Earlier this year, similar cases have highlighted the playbook for these pursuits, including a March incident when Miami police said a man fled after taking a dump truck, which showed why helicopters and K-9s are often deployed in searches for suspects who run from large stolen vehicles, NBC6 reported.
Plantation police are asking anyone with video or tips to contact investigators or call Broward Crime Stoppers. This story will be updated as officials release more information.
