Two men are facing felony charges after an overnight shooting in Elyria left one person wounded, with police saying a traffic stop led them to the alleged shooters. The victim is expected to recover, while both suspects are being held on $300,000 bonds.
The shooting happened around 2:30 a.m. yesterday on Wooster Street near East Avenue, according to Cleveland 19 News. Elyria police identified the suspects as Steven Baker, 22, of Lorain, and Enrique Hintz, 20, of Bedford. Police said someone later arrived at University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center with a gunshot wound, and the victim is expected to be OK.
Officers were investigating when they learned about the hospitalized victim, police said. Investigators then tracked down a suspect vehicle and made a traffic stop, leading to the arrests. No one else was reported hurt.
Baker is charged with felonious assault and discharging a firearm on or near prohibited premises, the station reported. Hintz faces complicity charges tied to both alleged offenses. Both men are being held at the Lorain County Jail as the case moves toward court proceedings.
What The Charges Mean
Under Ohio law, felonious assault generally involves causing or attempting to cause physical harm with a deadly weapon and is typically a second-degree felony. The state's complicity statute says someone accused of aiding or abetting an offense can be prosecuted and punished as a principal offender. The firearm-related count is addressed under Ohio's weapons laws, with the potential level of the offense depending on the circumstances and resulting harm.
The arrests come amid several recent shooting investigations in Elyria. In June, a shooting near Foster Avenue and Penfield Avenue sent another victim to UH Elyria, as previously reported by Hoodline.
