The selection makes the Kansas City region eligible for up to $160 million over the next decade and, project backers say, could support roughly 10,000 jobs in the metro by the mid 2030s. The effort starts with an initial $15 million award for the first two years and will scale only if the team hits NSF performance milestones.
What the NSF award actually is
The NSF named the Critical Materials Crossroads Engine one of 12 new Regional Innovation Engines and is providing an initial $15 million over two years, with the engine eligible for up to $160 million over the next decade if it demonstrates progress, according to the NSF. The Engines program pairs university research with private sector partners to speed technology deployment, grow regional economies and train workers for new manufacturing jobs.
Local leaders frame it as an economic and security win
Tony Caruso, the engine’s executive director, told KCUR the United States is "90% dependent on foreign sources" for some critical inputs and that "85% of that 90% comes from the People’s Republic of China." Caruso pointed to restrictions on items such as gallium, used in gallium nitride amplifiers, as a defense concern and pitched the Kansas City effort as a possible blueprint for rebuilding domestic capacity.
Who’s taking part
The engine is led from UMKC and pulls in a coalition of more than 260 partners, including 13 colleges and universities across Kansas and Missouri and additional partners outside the region, according to UMKC. Core academic partners named by UMKC include the University of Missouri, Missouri S&T, the University of Kansas and Kansas State, and Missouri S&T has confirmed it will serve as a core partner.
Jobs, dollars and a possible campus
An economic impact analysis prepared for the initiative projects nearly 10,000 average annual jobs over a ten year period and roughly $17 billion in GDP for the region, driven in part by more than $3 billion in equipment and facility investments, according to a University of Missouri Extension impact study. Backers say funding will support pilot scale facilities, workforce pipelines and lab to plant partnerships that could move more production steps closer to United States manufacturers.
Next steps and the questions ahead
The engine now enters an initial two year startup phase while leaders finalize governance, sites and industry agreements. Local reporting has flagged plans and ambitions for a multi site "Critical Materials Campus" around the KC metro. Major details, including exactly where industrial activity will land, how permitting and community benefits will be handled, and how quickly hiring will follow, are still to be determined. Turning plans into factories, test beds and trained workers will take years, but local leaders say the engine gives the region a front row seat in reshaping where America gets the materials behind the next generation of technology.
