More than $400,000 in stolen merchandise is back in law enforcement hands after Santa Clarita Valley Station deputies tracked a stolen semi-truck and two rented box trucks to Valencia on Friday, then swooped in on what looked a lot like a rolling redistribution center.
How Deputies Say They Tracked the Truck
According to a Facebook post by the Santa Clarita Valley Station, Major Crimes Bureau detectives alerted local deputies that a semi-truck loaded with stolen cargo was actively “pinging” in the Valencia area. Deputies said they located the semi, watched individuals unload merchandise into a Penske box truck and discovered that a second nearby Penske also appeared to be packed with stolen goods. Investigators recovered the haul, valued at more than $400,000, and arrested four suspects without incident while Major Crimes detectives continue the investigation, according to the post.
Cargo CATs and the Bigger Picture
The Major Crimes Bureau includes a specialized Cargo Criminal Apprehension Team, known as Cargo CATs, that focuses on tracking freight theft and coordinating recoveries across jurisdictions, according to the LASD Cargo CATs. Deputies said they watched as boxes were shifted from the semi into a rented Penske truck, then detained four people at the scene. Sheriff’s officials did not immediately release the suspects' names or specify charges, and investigators are working to identify the rightful owners of the recovered merchandise, according to the department's post on the Santa Clarita Valley Station.
