A Fourth of July night in downtown Vallejo took a grim turn when a driver allegedly tore through a parking lot and struck a pedestrian, leaving an adult woman fighting for her life and sparking a fast-moving police hunt.
The collision happened around 10:40 PM on the 400 block of Santa Clara Street, where officers arrived to find the woman in a parking lot with significant injuries. Police provided emergency care until EMS arrived, and she was rushed to a local hospital, where she remains in critical condition. The driver, according to police, fled the scene instead of staying.
Suspect Arrested, Charges Filed
The Vallejo Police Department says the crash occurred last Saturday at approximately 10:40 PM, and that its Traffic Division later identified the suspected driver as 20-year-old Vallejo resident Alejandro Rodriguez-Zetina. Patrol officers located and arrested him on Sunday.
Rodriguez-Zetina was booked on felony hit-and-run causing injury, reckless driving, and engaging in an exhibition of speed that resulted in bodily injury. Alcohol or controlled substances do not appear to be factors in the crash, according to the Vallejo Police Department.
What The Charges Mean
Leaving the scene of a crash that injures someone is not just bad form in California, it is a crime that can land a driver in serious legal trouble. Prosecutors can charge a hit-and-run involving injury under California Vehicle Code 20001, which may be filed as a felony depending on how badly the victim is hurt.
Convictions for felony hit-and-run or related reckless driving offenses can bring state prison or county jail time, fines, and stiff driver’s license penalties. For the legal fine print, see California Vehicle Code 20001 and the Santa Clara County bench guide.
A Troubling Traffic Pattern In Vallejo
This latest crash lands in the middle of a rough stretch for Vallejo pedestrians and scooter users. The city has logged several serious collisions this year, and local coverage has highlighted a string of pedestrian and scooter strikes that have strained both residents and first responders.
