Doorbell Video Shows Cables Being Torn Down
A Ring doorbell camera captured what Evergy and neighbors describe as people appearing to yank cables off poles near 88th Terrace and Wornall, an act that knocked out power to roughly 1,800 Evergy customers. According to KCTV5, utility crews and first responders were on scene within minutes, and power was restored to affected customers in about an hour. The station’s crew later documented melted cable and frayed wires still scattered along the sidewalk the next afternoon. Officials have not publicly announced any arrests in the case.
AT&T Confirms Damage, Offers Reward
AT&T confirmed the damaged line belonged to the company and says copper theft and vandalism have climbed in recent years, including in Missouri. According to AT&T, the company is offering a $20,000 reward in Missouri for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in copper-cable thefts. The company notice also warns that thieves sometimes damage fiber while hunting for copper, which can create wider service problems and public-safety risks.
Utilities Warn Of Serious Danger
Evergy has cautioned that tampering with power equipment creates serious hazards for both the public and utility workers. Contact with energized equipment can cause severe injury or death, according to the utility’s safety guidance. The company also warns that vandalism and attempted theft can trigger outages and make repairs more complicated, which stretches out restoration times for entire neighborhoods. Evergy directs customers to its outage and safety resources for tips on reporting outages or suspicious activity.
