A child riding a bicycle was seriously injured Thursday morning after being struck by an SUV at the intersection of Oakland Street and Woodlawn Avenue in Wellesley. The child was taken to a Boston hospital as police shut down part of Oakland Street and began piecing together the crash.
The collision happened just before 9 a.m., according to WCVB. Police said the driver remained at the scene, while the extent of the child’s injuries was not immediately released. Oakland Street was closed between Route 9 and Washington Street, and motorists were urged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.
Crash Reconstruction Unit Investigating
Wellesley Police said its crash reconstruction unit is investigating what led to the collision. No cause has been announced, and authorities have not released additional details about the child or the driver.
Wellesley Has Identified Nearby Safety Gaps
The crash lands in a town still working through gaps in its walking and biking network. Wellesley’s Townwide Safe Routes Plan lists Washington Street and Woodlawn Avenue among priority locations for pedestrian-crossing improvements, while a separate town planning document identifies Oakland Street as having sidewalk gaps and says existing bicycle infrastructure is limited.
Those planning documents do not determine what happened Thursday, and police have not announced a cause. For now, the investigation remains active as authorities document the collision and the child receives treatment.
