A 14-year-old boy who was shot multiple times in South Austin managed to drive himself to a West Side hospital early Sunday, police said.

The gunfire erupted around 1:23 a.m. in the 5500 block of West Van Buren Street near Lotus Avenue, according to authorities. Police say the teen was outside when he was hit by multiple rounds, then got behind the wheel and drove to Loretto Hospital. He was later transferred to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where he was listed in fair condition, as reported by CBS Chicago.

Detectives from the Chicago Police Department’s Harrison Area are working to piece together what happened, including who pulled the trigger and why. So far, police have not released any information on a suspect or a possible motive, CBS Chicago reported.

Another Violent Night for the West Side

The Van Buren shooting is the latest in a string of incidents that have left Austin neighbors rattled and detectives going door to door looking for witnesses. Hoodline previously covered nearby violence, including a May shooting that left four people wounded in Austin in a piece titled Gunfire Rocks Quiet Austin Block.

Investigators Asking for Help

Harrison Area detectives continue to investigate, and no arrests have been announced, according to CBS Chicago. Authorities say anyone with information should contact police as the shooting remains under active investigation.

This is a developing story. Hoodline will update this article as authorities release more information.
