A late-night ride over a Woodburn overpass ended in tragedy when a 29-year-old Aurora cyclist was struck and killed by an 18-year-old driver, authorities said. The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with officers, and investigators say their early look at the circumstances has not pointed to a criminal crash.
Travis Martin was hit at around 9:30 p.m. on the I-5 overpass on Newberg Highway, according to KOIN, citing Woodburn police. Martin was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead from his injuries, while the teenager behind the wheel remained at the scene and spoke with investigators.
A Second Fatal Bicycle Crash In Woodburn
The crash came just days after another fatal bicycle collision in Woodburn, capping a brutal stretch for local riders. The Oregon State Police said 79-year-old Howard Roy Hagen was killed July 24 when a Ford Expedition struck him on Highway 99E near Cleveland Street, a crash also detailed in the deadly Highway 99E crash.
No Charges Announced In Initial Report
Police said impairment and speed did not appear to contribute to the Newberg Highway crash and did not characterize it as criminal, KOIN reported. No charges were announced in the initial account, and the investigation remains ongoing.
