A late-night attempt to pass several vehicles on a Kendall County road ended in a head-on collision that killed three people and sent five others to area hospitals. The crash involved four vehicles and kept Illinois 71 closed near Millbrook for most of the night.
According to Illinois State Police, a driver was trying to pass multiple vehicles just after 9 p.m. Friday near Walker Road when the vehicle struck another driver head-on, NBC Chicago reported.
Police said four vehicles were ultimately involved. Three people were pronounced dead, while five others were taken to area hospitals as investigators worked to document the collision and crews cleared the wreckage.
Illinois 71 Reopened After Eight-Hour Closure
The roadway remained closed for more than eight hours before reopening shortly after 5 a.m. Saturday. As of the latest update from NBC Chicago, authorities had not released additional information about the people involved or explained whether any citations or charges were expected.
The fatal crash follows another serious multi-vehicle wreck in Kendall County this spring. In a May release, the Kendall County Sheriff's Office said five vehicles collided near Ridge Road and Bell Road, sending three people to hospitals and leaving the investigation active.
