A 39-year-old man is dead after being shot late Saturday night in Milwaukee's Roosevelt Grove neighborhood, and as of Sunday morning, police had made no arrests in the case. Officers were called to the intersection of N. 39th Street and W. Townsend Street just after 10 p.m. Saturday, where they found the victim suffering from gunshot wounds. Medics rushed him to a hospital, where he later died.
The Milwaukee Police Department confirmed the shooting in a release, pinpointing the response to the 3400 block of N. 39th Street at approximately 10:05 p.m., according to WISN 12 News. Investigators have not released the identity of the victim, and the motive behind the shooting remains unclear. Police have not said whether they believe the gunfire stemmed from a dispute, a robbery, or a targeted attack.
A Neighborhood Under Watch
Roosevelt Grove sits on Milwaukee's northwest side, a mostly residential stretch of single- and two-story homes mixed with light industry, bounded generally by W. Capitol Drive to the north, W. Keefe Avenue to the south, N. 35th Street to the east, and Sherman Park to the west. The neighborhood falls under MPD District 7, headquartered at 3626 W. Fond du Lac Avenue and responsible for patrolling a 13.3-square-mile area home to more than 98,000 residents.
This is not the first violent incident in the area this summer. Just six days earlier, on August 2, Milwaukee police arrested a 36-year-old suspect following a double shooting near 46th and Melvina streets in Roosevelt Grove that left two men wounded, as Hoodline previously reported. And on July 22, officers responded to a robbery-related shootout on the 2400 block of W. Townsend Street that wounded three people, a stretch of road that also saw a fatal shootout tied to an attempted robbery back on July 4, 2025, when a 21-year-old suspect was killed and a 20-year-old victim was hurt.
Citywide Numbers Drop, but Corridors Stay Hot
The Saturday night killing comes even as Milwaukee's overall homicide numbers have trended sharply downward this year. Homicides citywide fell 30% through the first half of 2026, with 51 recorded as of July 7 compared to 71 at the same point in 2025, according to CBS 58. Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman announced in July that the department posted a 98% clearance rate for homicides this year, though the clearance rate for non-fatal shootings sat far lower, at 41%.
Even so, no suspect has been identified or arrested in this latest killing. In May, MPD launched Summer Guardian 5.0, a targeted enforcement initiative aimed at curbing youth gun violence in high-priority neighborhoods that include Roosevelt Grove, combining proactive patrols with community stakeholder meetings, per Urban Milwaukee. Whether that effort factors into this investigation is unclear.
What Comes Next
If a suspect is eventually identified and charged with intentional homicide, Wisconsin law treats the offense as a Class A felony, the state's most serious criminal charge, carrying a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment upon conviction under Wisconsin Statute § 940.01. For now, the case remains open, with the victim's identity, the motive, and the circumstances of the shooting all unresolved.
