A 57-year-old woman was found dead inside a Bronx apartment near Grand Concourse and East 168th Street on Friday, suffering from injuries to her head and torso, according to authorities. No arrests have been made in connection with her death as of Saturday.
Law enforcement reported that the woman was discovered around 3:29 p.m. in the Concourse Village section of the Bronx, according to New York Daily News. The outlet reported that cops confirmed the discovery of her body but have not identified any suspects. The city Medical Examiner will determine her official cause of death, per the same report.
The block where she was found falls under the jurisdiction of the NYPD's 44th Precinct, which is headquartered at 2 East 169th Street and covers a roughly 1.97-square-mile stretch that includes Yankee Stadium and the Bronx Terminal Market, according to NYPD command records. That same precinct also runs a specialized Domestic Violence Squad out of its station house, offering victim advocates, help with orders of protection, and emergency housing transfers for residents caught in violent household disputes.
A Neighborhood Watching Crime Numbers Fall
The death comes even as the surrounding precinct has posted some of its steepest crime declines in years. Reported major crimes in the 44th Precinct dropped 12.65% in 2025 compared to the prior year, falling from 3,068 incidents to 2,680, according to Vital City. Borough-wide, major crime fell 12% across the Bronx during the first half of 2026, marking the largest decline of any borough in the city, as reported by News 12 Bronx.
Those citywide gains have not necessarily reached every category of violence. Domestic incidents involving family or household members accounted for 15% of homicides and 39% of felony assaults across New York City in 2025, according to the Center for New York City Affairs. Research from the University of Chicago Crime Lab has found that while the city's overall homicide rate fell 85% over 25 years, the share of homicides linked to domestic violence more than tripled over that same period.
Persistent Risks for Women in the Bronx
The Urban Resource Institute has reported that Black and Latina women in marginalized Bronx and Brooklyn neighborhoods face the city's highest rates of intimate partner homicide, with more than 60% of victims having had no prior contact with law enforcement or city support agencies before their deaths. Concourse Village itself is a densely populated, majority-renter community of roughly 45,000 residents with a median household income around $46,000, centered on the historic Art Deco Grand Concourse thoroughfare, according to Niche and Safemap data.
It is not the first violent incident to strike this stretch of the Grand Concourse corridor this year. A 21-year-old woman was punched repeatedly and robbed of her cellphone directly outside a building on East 168th Street near Grand Concourse in March, a case Hoodline previously reported drew a $3,500 reward from NYPD Crime Stoppers. A 46-year-old man was also fatally stabbed following a dispute near East 183rd Street and Grand Concourse last month, with multiple suspects fleeing the scene.
What Investigators Have Not Yet Determined
Detectives have not said whether the woman's death is being investigated as a homicide, and the cause and manner of death remain pending the Medical Examiner's official ruling. No suspects have been identified, and it remains unknown whether the case involved a domestic partner, acquaintance, or stranger. Anyone with information has not yet been given a specific tip line by police, according to available reporting.
