Grain Valley is about to get a second grocery option, with earth-moving work signaling that Aldi is on the way. The discount grocer is planned near City Hall and the community center along South Outer Road, with the store expected to open by January 2027. For a Jackson County city that currently has one grocery store, the arrival is a meaningful shift in the weekly shopping routine.
KSHB 41 reports that the current grocery landscape is centered on Cosentino's Price Chopper, while Aldi would offer another choice for Grain Valley and nearby communities. Residents began talking about the project after earth work appeared at the site, adding a very visible clue to a plan that had mostly existed on paper.
For shoppers, the appeal is straightforward: more competition and a store known for low prices and a tightly edited selection. Grain Valley resident Elaine Hughes told KSHB 41 that the Aldi would be “very convenient” for locals, while Laura Fethkenher said she was looking for better value and liked having a choice of stores.
City Planning Records Confirm The Aldi Project
The project also appears in a Grain Valley planning document describing a final development and site plan for a “new ALDI retail food market.” City Administrator Ken Murphy framed the project as the kind of gradual commercial growth the city hoped infrastructure investments around the interchange area would eventually attract. The available planning materials do not establish whether the city will promote and work to develop a new interchange at I-70 and Lefholz Road.
Aldi Is Expanding While Shoppers Chase Lower Prices
Grain Valley's new store fits into a much bigger expansion push. In a January announcement, ALDI U.S. said it planned to open more than 180 stores across 31 states in 2026, with nearly 2,800 locations expected nationwide by year's end and a longer-term goal of 3,200 stores by 2028. According to the USDA Economic Research Service, nine counties in Missouri had a 50-percent or more increase in the number of grocery stores per capita from 2009 to 2014.
The new Grain Valley location is expected to bring additional jobs and keep more people in town during the day, when many residents commute elsewhere for work. The opening date, store hiring plans and any grand-opening promotions have not been announced, but the dirt moving near South Outer Road suggests the grocery competition is no longer just a rumor.
