An 18-year-old woman was injured after gunfire broke out near Antioch’s Sycamore Square Shopping Center yesterday, with investigators saying she appears to have been an unintended victim. She was later released from the hospital, but police found a sizable trail of evidence in the roadway and say the investigation remains active.
The Antioch Police Department said officers responded to reports of gunfire near Sycamore Drive and Peppertree Way after the woman exited a business in the shopping center and was struck by gunfire. She was taken to a nearby hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and was later released. Officers secured the scene, interviewed potential witnesses and searched for evidence.

Investigators located 26 spent shell casings in the roadway near the shopping center, according to the department’s preliminary account. Police believe the woman was not the intended target, though they have not announced what led to the shooting, identified a suspect or disclosed a possible motive.
