A juvenile suspect is in custody after an armed robbery Saturday evening in south Columbia, where a young victim told officers he was threatened with a gun near the 400 block of Maple Grove Way. Police were called to the scene around 6:45 p.m., and no injuries were reported.
According to a statement from the Columbia Police Department, officers responded to the robbery on August 29, where the juvenile victim reported being threatened with a firearm by a juvenile suspect. As reported by ABC 17 News, officers responded at approximately 6:45 p.m., and a reporter on scene saw at least five police vehicles and a K-9 unit converge on the block as officers worked the case. The suspect was taken into custody, and the investigation remains ongoing, per the police release.
What Missouri Law Says About Armed Robbery Charges
Under Missouri Revised Statutes § 570.023, forcibly stealing property while armed with a deadly weapon, or while displaying what appears to be a deadly weapon, is classified as first-degree robbery, a Class A felony. That classification carries a statutory sentencing range of 10 to 30 years, or life imprisonment, for adult defendants. But because the suspect in this case is a juvenile, the path forward looks different, at least initially.
Missouri Revised Statutes § 211.071 addresses certification hearings for juveniles accused of dangerous felonies. Such a hearing concerns whether a minor may be transferred to adult criminal court. The 13th Judicial Circuit Court has a Family Court Juvenile Division in Boone County. It remains unclear whether the Boone County Juvenile Office will petition to transfer this suspect to general criminal court, and the exact ages of both the suspect and the victim, along with the type of firearm involved, have not been disclosed.
A Pattern of Youth Gun Cases in Columbia
This is not the first time a Columbia juvenile firearm case has drawn scrutiny this month. Police figures cited in that same reporting showed citywide reports of stolen firearms had declined 56% compared to the prior four-year average, though officials noted unlocked vehicles remain a primary source of stolen guns.
Violent Crime Down Overall, But Youth Arrests Climbing
The Columbia Police Department's 2025 annual report, its first comprehensive release of that kind since 2009, showed overall violent crime in the city dropped from 652 reported incidents in 2021 to 470 in 2025, according to 93.9 The Eagle. Reporting citing Missouri State Highway Patrol and Columbia Police Department data recorded 186 arrests of minors under 18 in Columbia in 2024.
