Austin residents were told to stay inside Monday morning as police searched for a suspect in a gun-related “active police situation.” The shelter-in-place request covered a southeast portion of the city while officers worked to locate the person.
The Austin Police Department asked residents between Ninth and Thirteenth avenues southeast to shelter in place, according to CBS Minnesota. The department said around 10:20 a.m. that officers were “currently searching for a suspect”; the report described the situation as involving a gun but did not provide a suspect description or announce any arrests or injuries.

Officials had not announced an all-clear in the initial report, and it was not immediately clear how long the shelter request would remain in effect. Residents in the affected area were asked to stay where they were rather than move toward the police activity.
The situation also echoes a recent armed police response in nearby Owatonna. KTTC reported that Owatonna residents were ordered to shelter in place after police said a man in crisis fired at officers; that incident ended when the man was taken into custody and hospitalized.
