The robbery happened around 3 a.m. on July 23, according to WGNO, which reported that police said the suspect stole a woman's purse near Elysian Fields. Additional detail from NOPD News describes a man on a bicycle confronting pedestrians, scuffling with a woman before grabbing her purse, then pointing a firearm at people who stepped in to help. He fled west on Marais Street, and security camera footage from the scene helped detectives piece together his escape route.
Police describe the suspect as a Black male between 25 and 35 years old, roughly 5 feet 7 inches tall with a medium build and dark complexion, wearing short braids or twists. At the time of the robbery, he had on a transparent orange rain poncho over a black shirt — a distinctive combination investigators are hoping the public remembers.

Bicycle Also Figured In Earlier Port Street Incident
This is not the first time this year that a bicycle has been at the center of a gun-involved confrontation in the Fifth District. On June 4, detectives opened an investigation in the nearby 1700 block of Port Street after a person riding a stolen bicycle pulled a handgun when the bike's owners confronted him. It is unclear whether that suspect is the same man wanted in the July 23 robbery, and police have not said the cases are linked.
Louisiana law treats armed robbery as a serious felony. Under Louisiana Revised Statute 14:64, a conviction carries a mandatory hard labor prison sentence of 10 to 99 years, without the possibility of parole or probation, according to the Louisiana State Legislature. A separate statute, La. R.S. 14:64.3, adds a consecutive five-year term when a firearm is used in the crime.
Robbery Numbers Falling Even As Cases Continue
