New Orleans started Tuesday with clear skies and temperatures around 82 degrees, but the day is headed toward a much hotter finish. The high should reach about 92, while humidity pushes the heat index as high as 105. A few afternoon storms could briefly interrupt the heat, mainly between 1 and 5 p.m.
Storms Could Bring Briefly Heavy Rain
The chance of rain is about 30 percent Tuesday, with the best opportunity along the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain and into nearby lower River Parishes. Any storm that develops could move slowly and bring a quick heavy downpour, lightning and stronger wind gusts, with up to a half-inch of rain possible in spots.
The National Weather Service is not listing any watches or warnings for Orleans Parish at this time. Winds should remain light, generally from the southeast at 5 mph or less, so they will offer little relief during the afternoon.
Heat Takes Over Later This Week
Wednesday will look similar, with mostly sunny skies, a high near 92 and a 40 percent chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms. The storm threat drops sharply Thursday, when sunshine and a high near 94 are expected, followed by a mostly clear night near 78.
Friday through Monday will be hotter and mostly dry, with highs around 95 Friday, 96 Saturday and 95 Sunday and Monday. Only isolated storms are expected over the weekend and early next week, with the National Weather Service noting that some locations could approach 100 degrees and that heat advisories may become necessary later in the week.
Plan Outdoor Time Around The Heat
For Tuesday and Wednesday, the best window for outdoor errands is the morning, before temperatures and the heat index climb. Anyone outside during the afternoon should take frequent breaks in shade or air conditioning, drink plenty of water and head indoors quickly if thunder is heard.
