New Orleans is starting Monday with clear skies and already-warm air, but the real heat is still building. Temperatures are expected to climb near 96 degrees, with humidity pushing the afternoon heat index into potentially dangerous territory.

Extreme Heat Warning Covers Monday Afternoon

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning from 11 a.m. through 8 p.m. Monday, with heat index values reaching as high as 115. West winds near 5 mph will offer little relief, so outdoor work, exercise and errands are safest before late morning or after sunset.

A chance of showers and thunderstorms arrives after 1 p.m., with the best odds during the midafternoon and a 30% chance of rain overall. Storms could briefly interrupt the heat, but tonight will remain muggy, with a low around 81 and heat index values still as high as 109 before skies turn mostly clear.

More Triple-Digit Feels-Like Temperatures Ahead

Tuesday looks mostly sunny with another high near 96 and a heat index up to 111. Wednesday through Friday will stay nearly as hot, with highs from 95 to 96 and only limited chances for afternoon or evening thunderstorms.

Saturday offers the best chance for rain in the extended forecast, with a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms and a high near 93. Sunday remains mostly sunny and hot near 94, with another slight chance of storms after 1 p.m.

Heat Safety Remains The Main Concern

City officials are urging residents to drink water, stay in air conditioning when possible, avoid prolonged sun exposure and check on older neighbors, children and anyone with medical conditions. New Orleans has posted extreme-heat preparation information through NOLA Ready, while the National Weather Service continues to monitor the warning and storm chances.
