New Orleans is starting Thursday mostly clear and muggy, with temperatures already in the low 80s before sunrise. The day will turn dangerously hot fast, with a high near 94 degrees and heat-index values potentially reaching 110.
Heat Advisory Runs Through Thursday Evening
A Heat Advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday across southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi, according to the National Weather Service. Skies should stay sunny, rain chances will remain minimal, and southwest winds will be light at around 5 mph.
Thursday night will offer only limited relief, with mostly clear skies and a low near 78. The humidity may keep conditions feeling oppressive even after sunset, making air conditioning, hydration and breaks from the heat especially important.
Friday Through Monday Stays Hot
Friday and Saturday are expected to bring more sunshine and highs near 95, while overnight lows remain around 79 to 80 degrees. The National Weather Service says heat-index values could reach about 109 on Friday and climb into the lower 110s over the weekend, with additional heat alerts possible.
Sunday brings the first meaningful rain chance in several days, but it is still expected to be mostly sunny and hot through the afternoon. A 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms arrives after 1 p.m., followed by a slight storm chance Monday afternoon as highs again approach 95.
Heat Safety Is The Main Concern
Residents should drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned spaces when possible and avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the afternoon. Lightweight clothing, frequent breaks and checking on older neighbors or anyone vulnerable to heat illness can help reduce the risk as the hot pattern continues into next week.
