A death investigation is underway in West Park after Broward Sheriff's Office deputies swarmed Southwest 46th Avenue early Monday morning following a deadly shooting, leaving a body on the sidewalk as grieving bystanders gathered nearby. Authorities had not disclosed how the person died as of the initial report.
According to WPLG Local 10, the death investigation began in the 2300 block of Southwest 46th Avenue, where a Local 10 News crew observed a body on the ground. The scene had cleared by the time the investigation wrapped, though the station has not confirmed what led to the death. CBS News Miami reported that the incident stemmed from a shooting, with its news crews observing not only the body but a car being towed from the scene as BSO homicide detectives canvassed the street. Crime scene tape reportedly cordoned off the area for hours as detectives worked the block.
A Corridor With a Troubled Recent History
Monday's shooting adds to a string of violent incidents that have touched this stretch of West Park in 2026. In May, the BSO Traffic Homicide Unit investigated a fatal collision at the intersection of Pembroke Road and Southwest 46th Avenue that killed passenger Edger Surles and injured six others, according to the Boca Post. That intersection sits along the same major roadway corridor where Monday's shooting unfolded.
West Park has also seen multiple homicide and violent crime investigations elsewhere in the city this year. In March, BSO homicide detectives launched a murder investigation after 58-year-old Timothy Motes was found fatally shot in the 5400 block of Southwest 22nd Street, with Broward Crime Stoppers offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest. In May, BSO's Violent Crime Unit investigated a shooting near Mary Saunders Park after a wounded man drove to neighboring Hollywood with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds, per WPLG Local 10.
Federal Case Underscores Broader Violent Crime Concerns
Just two weeks before Monday's shooting, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida announced that a 24-year-old West Park resident had been sentenced to more than 26 years in federal prison for kidnapping a chauffeur at gunpoint following an August 2025 shooting in Fort Lauderdale, then forcing the driver to take him back to West Park. Federal prosecutors and the ATF worked alongside local police departments on that case, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
West Park does not operate its own municipal police department. Instead, law enforcement, fire protection, and emergency medical services in the city are provided directly by the Broward Sheriff's Office under an interlocal contract established in 2007, which is why BSO homicide and crime scene units routinely lead death investigations within city limits. The arrangement reflects the small scale of the municipality itself: West Park was incorporated in 2005 as Broward County's 31st municipality, formed by combining the neighborhoods of Carver Ranches, Lake Forest, Miami Gardens, and Utopia, and covers roughly 2.2 square miles along the Broward-Miami-Dade county line. Census Bureau estimates compiled by Data Commons put the city's 2024 population at 15,249, with a median individual income of $25,143.
What Detectives Have Not Yet Said
It remains unclear whether BSO homicide detectives have identified any suspects or how they are officially classifying Monday's incident. Local 10 News said it would provide updates through its broadcasts and page refreshes as the investigation develops. Anyone with information can contact Broward Crime Stoppers, which offers rewards of up to $5,000 for anonymous tips that lead to an arrest in BSO homicide and death investigations.
Monday's shooting follows other recent Hoodline coverage of outdoor death investigations across Broward County, including a dawn hit-and-run near Hallandale Beach earlier this year that was also handled by BSO Traffic Homicide detectives, and a body pulled from a Dania Beach canal earlier this month that BSO Homicide Unit detectives are still investigating. As with those cases, the cause and circumstances behind Monday's death in West Park remain under investigation.
