A steep stretch of NW Cornell Road west of Portland became a technical rescue scene Tuesday morning after crews found a body below the roadway, requiring a rope system to bring it back up. Portland Fire and Rescue and Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue were handling the recovery while law enforcement and the medical examiner were called in.
The call came in shortly before 10:30 a.m. as a high-angle rescue in the 5200 block of NW Cornell Road, near NW 53rd Drive, according to KATU. Firefighters faced a steep incline and began using a technical rescue rope system to move the body back toward the roadway.
In an official update, Portland Fire and Rescue clarified that the situation was a body recovery rather than an active rescue of a living person. The medical examiner asked crews to leave the body in place until the examiner arrived, keeping the operation active at the roadside.
