Boston Green Academy could leave Brighton for South Boston in 2028, a proposed relocation that would give the school a much larger campus while turning the daily commute into the first big question for families. The move is still being studied, but it is already forcing parents to weigh better facilities against a trip that could stretch well beyond the school run they know now.
Boston Public Schools announced the potential relocation Monday, with the school tentatively slated to move for the 2028-2029 academic year, according to The Boston Globe. Boston Green Academy currently operates in Brighton and serves students from across the city, so the proposal is less a neighborhood-school shuffle than a citywide decision about access, transportation, and space.
The idea fits into BPS’s broader Long-Term Facilities Plan, which calls for a smaller number of larger, more fully resourced schools. The district describes that plan as data-driven and shaped by community input, with an equity lens intended to guide major building changes, according to Boston Public Schools.
More Room, Less Convenience
The South Boston High School building could offer roughly 15 additional classrooms, two full-sized gyms, four more science labs, athletic fields, and nearly 50 percent more square footage than BGA’s current home. Principal Matt Holzer said the larger setting could allow the school to welcome more students without giving up its personalized approach, but the transportation math is less friendly: the South Boston site has more challenging access, the drive from Brighton could take 35 to 40 minutes each morning, and BPS is proposing a dedicated yellow shuttle from Allston-Brighton for six years, The Boston Globe reported.
That trade-off matters because BGA’s current Brighton location is close to public transportation and has become part of how families make the school work. The academy moved to Brighton in 2014 and has built its identity around sustainability, college preparation, and career-focused learning, according to the school’s history and vision page.
The proposed move would affect a notably diverse student body. Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education enrollment data for the 2025-2026 school year shows that about 46 percent of BGA students identify as Hispanic or Latino, roughly 37 percent as Black or African American, and close to 80 percent are classified as low income, making reliable transportation and continuity especially consequential for families.
A Bigger Campus With A Complicated History
The South Boston building also carries a history that cannot be separated from any new school plan. During Boston’s court-ordered desegregation and busing era, racial conflicts at South Boston High deeply affected Black students bused into the neighborhood, according to the Boston Desegregation and Busing Initiative. A new BGA campus would bring a school with a largely Black and Latino enrollment into a building long associated with one of the city’s most painful education battles.
The proposal follows the closure of Excel High School, which had occupied part of the former South Boston High campus. When BPS announced the closure plan in 2025, officials said the city hoped to renovate the building and eventually use it for an anchor high school, as Boston.com reported.
Excel officially closed June 30 as part of the district’s latest round of school closures, according to the BPS closure timeline. The next phase is feasibility and community planning, not a finished relocation agreement, and BPS says its facilities work will continue to be shaped by students, families, neighbors, and school partners.
For Boston Green Academy families, the question is now whether the promise of more classrooms, labs, gyms, and fields can outweigh the cost of getting there. The answer will likely depend as much on the shuttle plan and family support as it does on what happens inside the renovated building.
