A man in his 30s is dead and his 17-year-old daughter is hospitalized after a shooting erupted inside a home in Buckeye's Sienna Hills neighborhood early Thursday. A suspect who also lived at the home, described as a man in his 20s, was taken into custody within minutes after an off-duty police sergeant driving nearby was flagged down by neighbors.
According to KTAR News 92.3 FM, the call came in just after 1 a.m. Thursday, sending officers to 214th Lane near Sienna Hills Parkway and McDowell Road. Responding officers found the girl's father dead inside the home from gunshot wounds, while his 17-year-old daughter had also been shot; her injuries were described as not life-threatening.
Buckeye police say the shooting broke out during a fight inside the residence, which is home to a large family, according to a report on the incident. Investigators were questioning the detained suspect, who also lived at the home, though his exact relationship to the victims remained unclear as of Thursday's report.
Off-Duty Sergeant Makes Swift Arrest
The arrest came together fast largely by chance. A Buckeye police sergeant who had just ended her shift was driving home in a marked patrol car near the home when the call came in, per the station's report. Neighborhood residents flagged her down and pointed toward the suspect, allowing her to order his surrender and detain the man in his 20s without incident within minutes, before additional officers arrived. Officers also recovered a firearm at the scene, according to the same account. Police had not released the suspect's name as of the initial report.
A Neighborhood With A Troubling History
This is not the first time gunfire has torn through Sienna Hills. In November 2024, Buckeye police responded to a separate domestic violence double-shooting in the same neighborhood near McDowell Road and Sienna Hills Parkway, where, according to FOX 10 Phoenix, a 23-year-old man shot his former girlfriend before turning the gun on himself. The woman survived multiple gunshot wounds in that earlier case.
Buckeye has also seen other fatal shootings in recent months. In June, Buckeye police arrested 57-year-old Roger McCrae on second-degree murder charges after he was accused of killing 56-year-old Ewell McCrae in central Buckeye. In May, a fatal shooting near Miller and Warner Roads forced road closures while detectives processed the scene, as Hoodline reported at the time. And in January, a homeowner near Yuma Road and 237th Lane shot and killed an intruder inside a residential home, in a case Hoodline also covered.
What Charges Could Look Like
Under Arizona Revised Statutes § 13-3601, violent offenses such as assault or homicide receive a domestic violence legal classification when they occur between people who live in the same household or share a family relationship, according to the Arizona State Legislature. Since the suspect and the victims reportedly shared the home, any charges could carry that designation, though police have not said whether the suspect and the victims were related.
If charged with second-degree murder, the suspect would face a Class 1 felony under A.R.S. § 13-1104 and § 13-710, which covers non-premeditated intentional killings. That statute carries a presumptive sentence of 16 years and a maximum of 25 years in state prison. No charges had been formally filed as of Thursday's report.

Buckeye's Sienna Hills subdivision sits within a city that has exploded in size in recent years. U.S. Census Bureau data shows Buckeye covers more than 393 square miles in Maricopa County and has ranked among the fastest-growing suburban cities in the country, a boom that has fueled residential development throughout the West Valley. The Buckeye Police Department, which earned dual reaccreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies in November 2024, continues to investigate Thursday's shooting alongside a string of other recent violent incidents across the growing city.
