Champlin's free summer concert season on the Mississippi River wraps up Thursday with a blast of 1990s nostalgia, as the seven-piece tribute act Gen X Jukebox takes the stage at Mississippi Crossings starting at 6 pm. The Minneapolis-based band performs in full costume as era icons like Britney Spears, Eddie Vedder, Shania Twain, and Garth Brooks, running through decade-spanning pop, rock, rap, country, and grunge hits.

According to the City of Champlin, coolers are not permitted at the show, though attendees can bring chairs and blankets after 3 pm to claim a spot along the riverfront. Food and beverages will be available for purchase on-site. The band itself features six lead vocalists performing the format, according to GigSalad, an ensemble formed by veterans of the Twin Cities music scene.

A Season-Long Lineup Wraps Up

Thursday's show caps a lineup that ran the gamut of cover acts throughout the summer. Per the city's Facebook announcement, the 2026 series has featured performers including Dually Noted, Lookin' Back with Fog Pilot, The Good, The Bad & The Funky, Shalo Lee, Roseland, Clapton Complete, 8Foot4, Show Me Your Hits, and Ashley Wineland, along with the Father Hennepin Festival's booking of Good for Gary back in June.

The overall 2026 Mississippi Crossings Summer Series ran from May 28 through Thursday, though it isn't quite finished: a makeup concert by local band Roseland is scheduled for September 3 after a June date was rained out, according to Family Fun Twin Cities. All series performances are free and open to the public.

Riverfront Views, Corporate Backing

The series carries premier sponsorship from Lightbridge Academy, Luther Brookdale Toyota, David Keniston, ChFC®, AAMS®, Edward Jones, and Morrie's Brooklyn Park Subaru, per the city's announcement. The lineup also included a segment called Church of Cash. Backdropping every show is the venue itself: a 2,000-square-foot indoor banquet facility paired with a 600-person open-air amphitheater at 307 East River Parkway, according to Cvent.

That riverfront setting didn't happen by accident. The 160-acre Mississippi Crossings redevelopment district traces back to a 1999 citizen task force recommendation and a 2019 master development agreement with Minneapolis firm Greco, which opened the adjacent 215-unit Bowline apartment complex in March 2022, per Multifamily & Affordable Housing Business. The site had previously held dilapidated commercial structures from the late 20th century. State legislative action in 2019 granted Champlin Tax Increment Financing authority to fund the event center, amphitheater, public dock, and housing, according to a legislative report from Representative Zack Stephenson.

State Money Still Flowing to the Riverfront

The public investment hasn't stopped. In May, Minnesota state bonding legislation allocated grant funding to Champlin for a jetty and bank stabilization project upstream of the Mississippi Crossings public dock system, per the Minnesota Revisor's Office. The dock system expands watercraft access to the river for area residents.

The venue also does more than host concerts. The city-owned event center serves as Champlin's official Ward 1 polling location during municipal elections, a role it played during the city's May Ward 3 special election. It's also one of the assets under review in Champlin's Parks Master Planning Study, launched in 2025 to evaluate future improvements at Mississippi Crossings alongside Mill Pond, Doris Kemp Park, and Veterans Memorial Park, according to GreenStep Cities. The city maintains more than 300 acres of municipal parkland overall.

Getting There Without a Parking Headache

Parking immediately next to the amphitheater is limited during popular summer events, so Champlin has again arranged free shuttle service through First Student, connecting off-site parking at Andrews Park and the Champlin Ice Forum to drop-off points near the venue. Champlin, a Hennepin County suburb of 23,294 residents situated along the Mississippi River's west bank, has leaned on the riverfront venue repeatedly this summer for community gatherings, including its Father Hennepin Fest and its Paws in the Park dog-adoption event earlier this month.
