A Saturday morning apartment fire in Coney Island sent one civilian to a hospital in serious condition and left a firefighter with minor injuries. The blaze was knocked down quickly, but the civilian remained seriously hurt after the emergency response.
The fire was reported at 6:33 a.m. between Surf and Mermaid avenues, according to News 12 Brooklyn, citing the FDNY. One person was taken to an area hospital in serious condition, while the firefighter was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Firefighters had extinguished the blaze by 7:22 a.m. Officials had not yet identified what sparked the fire, and the cause remains under investigation.
Another Coney Island Fire Left One Person Injured
The incident comes after a separate fourth-floor fire at a Coney Island apartment building in May that injured one person, according to Hoodline. That earlier blaze also drew a major emergency response, underscoring the risks firefighters and residents face in the neighborhood's dense apartment buildings.
Brooklyn has seen other apartment fires involving both residents and firefighters this year. In a May Red Hook blaze, two civilians and a firefighter were taken to a hospital, while another firefighter was treated at the scene, according to News 12 Brooklyn.
Fire Marshals Continue Investigating
For now, the confirmed picture is narrow but serious: one civilian hospitalized in serious condition, one firefighter treated for minor injuries, and a fire that was out in under an hour. FDNY fire marshals are continuing to investigate the cause as officials work to determine what happened inside the apartment.
