A driver was left trapped inside a car and seriously hurt Wednesday afternoon after the vehicle swerved off Walnut Grove Road and crashed into a nearby creek in Cordova. Shelby County Sheriff's deputies responded to the single-car wreck near Forest Hill Irene Road at 12:37 p.m., finding the driver pinned inside the vehicle before rescuers could get them out.
According to the Shelby County Sheriff's Office, the driver was removed from the car and taken to the hospital in critical condition. The crash landed in an unincorporated stretch of Cordova, which is why county deputies rather than Memphis police handled the response — unincorporated pockets of the area fall under Shelby County Sheriff's Office patrol and county fire services, while incorporated parts of Cordova are covered by Memphis police, according to Explore the Cordova Community.

The intersection of Walnut Grove Road and Forest Hill Irene Road has seen its share of emergencies before. The corridor was the site of an overturned car crash in January and a fatal shooting investigation in July 2025, per Citizen. Walnut Grove Road itself is a major east-west arterial outside the Interstate 240 loop, carrying more than 54,000 vehicles daily along its busier segments toward Germantown and Cordova, according to Memphis Metropolitan Planning Organization congestion tracking. The roadway transitions from suburban commercial corridors into residential neighborhoods and watershed terrain near Shelby Farms, where roadside drainage creeks and natural tributaries of the Wolf River cross beneath the pavement, per the Wolf River Conservancy.
