A Corvallis man was killed Monday afternoon when his SUV crossed Highway 20 and rolled near Philomath. The crash shut the rural route for about two hours as investigators worked the scene.

The driver was identified as 55-year-old Eric Hillard Lee, according to KATU. Lee was westbound in a black 1999 Honda Passport when the vehicle went across the highway and rolled, coming to rest on the eastbound side.

The crash was reported at about 3:30 p.m., roughly seven miles west of Philomath. Deputies closed Highway 20 at Prist Road and sent drivers on a detour at Highway 223, while the Benton County Sheriff's Office said it was still unclear what caused the rollover.

Investigators Ask Drivers For Information

The sheriff's office is asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has related information to call 541-753-8477 or email [email protected], KATU reported. Philomath Police, Philomath Fire and Rescue, the Corvallis Regional Communications Center and the Oregon Department of Transportation assisted at the scene.

Highway 20 Has Seen Other Fatal Crashes

The crash happened along a corridor with a recent history of deadly wrecks. In 2024, a collision about seven miles west of Philomath killed two drivers, according to Philomath News, while a broader review published by Lincoln Chronicle documented recurring fatal crashes and safety concerns along Highway 20 between Newport and Philomath.
